Why I Created AVL Clay
Why I Created AVL Clay
By Arleen Ferrara, Founder
When I moved to Asheville, I carried with me boxes of clay tools, a head full of ideas, and a heart full of longing for something I didn’t yet have here: a pottery community.
Back on the West Coast, I was lucky to be part of a vibrant circle of potters. We shared more than just a studio — we shared meals, laughter, and long afternoons swapping tips and stories. We celebrated each other’s successes, oohed and ahhed over newly glazed pieces, and supported each other when something didn’t go right (in pottery and life). It wasn’t just about making pots. It was about connection.
When I arrived in Asheville, I found an incredible clay tradition — talented artists, rich history, and a deep love and respect for craft. But I couldn’t quite find a space that blended everything I loved about my West Coast studio with the open, collaborative spirit I craved. I wanted a place where beginners and experienced potters could work side-by-side, where questions were welcome, where you could walk in and feel instantly at home. At the same time I was aware that after hurricane Helene so many clay artists had lost their work spaces, equipment and in some cases livelihood. I knew there was a need for a place like AVL clay.
So, I decided to build it.
AVL Clay is my way of recreating that sense of belonging while adding my own Asheville twist. It’s more than a ceramics studio — it’s a place to create, to connect, and to grow together. Whether you’re throwing your very first bowl or perfecting something for the thousandth time, you’ll find space here to explore, experiment, and share your journey.
When you walk into AVL’s clay spacious studio, you’ll see more than just pottery wheels and worktables. You’ll see possibilities — the pieces you haven’t made yet, the friends you haven’t met yet, the skills you haven’t honed yet.
I believe clay has a way of slowing us down, humbling us, and bringing us into the moment. I also believe community has the power to lift us up, inspire us, and make us feel part of something bigger. AVL Clay is where all of those things meet.
I can’t wait to see what we’ll make together.
